After winning the Bundesliga and Champions League in the previous season, Bayern did not manage to retain any of their titles in 2001-2002. They finished 3rd in the league and lost in the quarter-finals of the Champions League against Real Madrid. Notable players were Owen Hargreaves, Giovanni Elber, Samu Kuffour and Robert Kovac.
